Over time, basketball has developed to involve common techniques of shooting, passing and dribbling, as well as players positions, and offensive and defensive strategies. Basketball is also a very popular spectator sport.
The more common fans now a days support their favorite team by frequently coming out to watch live games, buy player and team merchandise; moreso wear their favorite player and team jersey.
What do you do for your favorite basketball team? How can you express your loyalty and support for the team that has made so much for you? It does not matter if it wins or not, you just have to be there for them every time. Wearing a basketball jersey can express those feelings. Sometimes, people wear them for years, no matter what if their team won this year or not. It gives them a sense of camaraderie when they meet people who also wear a basketball jersey.
Lets take as example The Pistons from Detroit. If you were not had one, you were considered un-cool. The basketball jersey has become in Detroit not only the sign of all Pistons fans, but symbol of Detroit. Even if the media sometimes trashes this town, it is a city that has been through many hard times, but it always managed to get over. We show that way a sense of civic pride, we cannot abandon it, as we cannot abandon our team.
A basketball jersey may also signify the beginning of your high school adventures. We all know how hard people try to make it into the basketball team or the football team. They value so much their first jersey because it is kind of the beginning of their manhood. It showed how good you were, how skilled, disciplined and dedicated to the sport you were and all the other people admired you.
We all keep those basketball jerseys even if we are now grown up men; it has a sentimental value and it can bring back wonderful memories since you were young.

A coach will take a fundamental play and add his or her own twist, or slightly change the play, to make it his own. In some cases, the play works out in the traditional sense so well that no change is needed.
One of the top fundamental plays in basketball is the cut through. This play is very popular and something you have probably done or seen on the court before. It is an important play for moving the players and the ball across the court to get into the ideal position by the basket.
The Basics of the Play
The cut through involves cutting a player across to the other side of the court. Cutting means basically going through the opposing team to the other side in a quick, sharp movement.
This play is used to attack the defense zone. It can really help to break up defense that is heavy or otherwise blocking the play.
Cutting helps to create a screen or open area where the defense is held off and the player can pass or shoot the ball. The cut through play opens up a wide screen that allows for good play.
Tips for the Cut Through Play
When performing the cut through play it is important that players remember the two step rule still applies. It can be easy for the player with the ball to forget this.
When cutting, the cutter and the screener should pass shoulder to shoulder with the screener opening up toward the ball. This play is best used when passing is blocked or the defensive blocking is really strong.
There are some different options coaches often use during this play. They involve different players depending on the action on the court. It is a play where the result is really dictated by what is happening now, and not a play that is planned out in advance.
The cut through play is a fundamental play because every team will encounter a time in the game when the defense is really on their game, making passing and even moving the ball difficult. This play allows for the court to be opened up and gives the player with the ball more options as to what to do.
It is a great saving grace type play that a coach can call in a last minute effort to beat the clock and get the ball to the basket. The cut through play is most likely to be found in every coach’s play book and something that every coach will use at one point or another.

Why is this Important?
If you ask most coaches to describe what the game of basketball is when you simplify it to its basic principles they will give you offense and defense. While this is true, Bobby Knight believes that transition is a critical component of sound basketball. Think about it for a second

Basketball position This is the least understood position in basketball and often the most neglected by young players. The initial tendency of players when not having the ball is to stand and wait until their turn comes. However, this must be resolved by moving into a position that offers readiness, both for defense and offense. You must always keep a crouched body position, with knees flexed and feet apart. The hands must also be in upward position at shoulder level, nearest to the body.
Foot Placement Feet must always take the distance between those of the shoulders with the non-pivoting foot in front and the pivoting foot slightly backward.
Leg positioning The key here is to keep the legs flexed. This way, your body will atomically crouch and provide you a position that is ideal for offensive play and ball handling. Flexed knees will also create an effect on the body that will provide it more power and easier movements.
Arm position You must always keep your arms at chest level. This position is nearest to the top of your head and the lower sides of your body.
Head position Your head is vital in keeping your body balanced. If it is too far backward or too forward, you might suffer from an unbalanced body and you are even more prone to injuries. Thus, you must keep your whole body aligned at the center as if a stick is inserted your body.
Change of pace This normally gives the player on the offensive play to distract the opponent from guarding. This is done through a three-part series of movements namely running, straightening to give the impression of stopping and relaxing and finally, setting the pace again.
Change of direction This is used for shaking the defender from his position which then gives you the chance to make points. You need to be a little explosive in this part so as to free yourself from his defense. Be quick and agile then don’t give hints that you are just changing your position for distraction. Make it as natural as you can.

Stretching helps to increase the range of motion in your joints and aids in flexibility. When you stretch, each move should be slow and focused. You should never force a stretch or bounce during a stretch.
The following 6 stretching exercises should be done after a quick warm up before you playa game or begin practice.
Stretch 1 – Hamstring
The hamstring is located on the back of the upper thigh. Stretching this muscle is important to help you run, jump and move properly.
To do this move, sit cross legged on the floor and straighten one leg out keeping the other leg bent. Lean forward and feel the stretch. Repeat on the other leg.
Stretch 2 – Back
Your back is also an essential muscle to stretch to allow you to move properly.
To do this move lie on your back with your legs flat on the floor. Hold your right leg at the knee and slowly bring to your chest, keeping the other leg straight. Feel the stretch, lower the leg and repeat with the other leg.
Stretch 3 – Calf
Your calf is important to stretch to help protect your shin as well.
To do this move you will need to lean against a wall with your forearms. Put your head on your hands and bring one knee towards the wall, keeping the other leg straight and the foot on the floor. Repeat with the other leg.
Stretch 4 – Groin
Groin stretches help protect you against some very painful strains.
To do this move sit on the floor with bottoms of feet together. Push your legs to the floor and feel the stretch.
Stretch 5 – Shoulder
Your arms get a big workout during playing basketball. You have to stretch them carefully.
To stretch your arms put one arm behind your head touching the back of your shoulder. Use your other arm to push the bent arm down and stretch. Repeat with the other arm.
Another stretch to try involves taking both arms behind your back, clasping your hands together and pulling out slightly from your body.
Stretch 6 – Arms
You want to limber up your arms. This is not really a stretch in the way the others were, but you want to just circle your arms at your sides in both directions to help loosen them up and warm up the muscles. You can scissor them in front of your body as well.
These 6 stretches will help you to loosen up your joints and warm up your muscles so you are limber and ready to play. You should never skip stretching before playing or practicing. With proper stretching you will see you are more flexible and have the ability to move easier with fewer injuries.

Basketball bears a distant resemblance to it’s early days, when the basketball net wasn’t a net at all but a peach basket. Apparently James Naismith the inventor of basketball, had a keen intuition for sports, but not quite so keen on physics. The obvious problem with the impromptu basketball net, was that there was no hole in the bottom for the basket ball to fall through. I sure we’ve all seen the commercial where one of the players has to climb up the ladder to retrieve the basketball after each score. The brilliant solution by Mr Naismith, was of course to cut a hole in the bottom of the basket. Seems like an obvious solution to those of us versed in the modern game of basketball, but wait the punch line is yet to come. The hole they cut, wasn’t big enough for the basketball to fall through. It was however, big enough for a person standing on the floor to poke a broom handle through and push the basketball ball back up through the top. Funny how the obvious is not always so obvious to those at the time. In spite of it’s somewhat comical beginnings, basketball has truly evolved to one of the premier sporting events in the world. I bet James would be thrilled to see his little game today. I hope.
Dusting Jack
Basketball had quite a few funny quirks along the road to success. One of the early interesting rules would have pretty hilarious consequences today. In today’s game of basketball, when a ball goes out of bounds, the last player to touch the basketball ball, is ruled to have been responsible for putting the ball out of play, and therefor his/her team loses possession of the ball. Things were a little different with the original basket rules. In the original game of basketball, the first player to retrieve a ball that had gone out of bounds, earned possession of the ball for his team. I suppose that makes sense when your first playing the game in a gymnasium, with one gym teacher, who doesn’t want to have to retrieve every out of bounds ball. Why don’t just let the players retrieve the basket balls. Ha! Could you imagine the melee that would occur in today’s professional games, if that was the rule. I can just see Kobe Bryant climbing over Jack Nicholson, spilling his drink, knocking his glasses all cock-eyed in a furiously desperate attempt to grab the loose ball before his opponent. Comical . . . yes. Hilarious . . . yes. Entertaining . . . yes. Likely to be adopted by the NBA . . . not frigging likely. We can always dream though.
Entertainment As Sport
Basketball certainly has to be one of the more successful forms of sports entertainment today. From all the pre-game theatrical dramatics (Ala the Micheal Jordan era Chicago Bulls) to the bad boys that seem to be prevalent in any sport, but especially basketball. In spite of the fact that most basketball games are decided in the last few minutes of play, it is truly an exciting game to watch and play. Especially if you get the opportunity to view a basketball game live. Highly recommended. Those guys make the television guys look like their moving in slow motion.

Triangle defense describes the floor position of each defensive player in relationship with the player they are defending, with the ball, and with the basket.
The defender on the ball has only one rule and that is to maintain a body position that will block a direct path to the basket by the dribbler. I call this

Basketball drills range from as simple as practising a chest pass with another player to basketball drills that require multiple players to work on game time simulations, like practising a fast break by running 3 players against 2 defenders.
No matter what skill level you are at or what type of basketball drills you are doing , you must warm up first to avoid injury. Simple drills may not seem very demanding but if you have stiff muscles you run the risk of pulling something. All you need to do to warm up is some stretching of the legs and back for 10 minutes. After stretching some light running to get the heart going and you should be ready to practise your basketball drills.
There are whole books written on the subject of basketball drills, I’ll just cover the larger catagories. This will be a very simplistic overview and not meant to insult those of you that have played the game for a while.
1. Ball handling, this includes dribbling and passing.
2. Shooting, this includes lay ups, free throws, 3 point shots and jump shots from varying points on the court.
3. Rebounding, both offensive and defensive.
4. Offensive play
5. Defnsive play
All these are vary broad catagories and many books have been written on each subject by itself.
To continue to improve your basketball game you must always work on the basics but keep adding more difficult basketball drills as you progress. The things you find difficult today will seem easy after practising them for a while. before you can steal the ball, drive the length of the court and do a spinning 360 dunk, you have to become a accomplished defensive player and ball handler.
Just think, if you pay your dues, practise hard and get some good coaching and training advice you may just get a free ride to college. Look at some of the people in the NBA that came right out of high school to make a impact. They did that by working harder than everyone else and practising basketball drills over and over until it was second nature.
There are some outstanding training systems available, put out by great athletes and trainers. A good training system will even have videos to help you see the best way to do your basketball drills. Get a training program, get to work. Who knows we may see you on TV some day.
