Exercises to Increase Vertical Leap and Slam Dunk
Posted on March 10th, 2010 by in Verticle Jump High Articles, tags: Eclectic, exercises, increase, Todays, verticalIn this article I am going to explain the best exercises to increase your vertical leap and slam dunk. In high school I played on the high school team and was determined to be able to slam dunk by the time I graduated. Using these exercises along with others, I was able to reach that goal and actually slam dunked in a game. I can’t promise you that you’ll improve your vertical by x amount of inches in x amount of days – you’re going to be the determining factor of how successful you’ll be. It’s up to you take this information and run with it – but here are some of the tools to get you started…
Jump Shrugs
Starting from the “hang” position, burst up with your legs like your a doing a clean except this time focus on shrugging your shoulders up. Hence the name jump “shrugs”. Shoot for about 3-6 reps per set on this one.
Depth Jumps
This is a continuation of a shock jump. In a shock jump you find a box that is about equivalent to your highest vertical jump. You start by standing on the box and stepping down but focusing on trying to take in the impact of the ground without movements of your legs. Also try to shoot for just the balls of your feet to touch the ground, not your heels.
In depth jumps once you hit the ground from your shock jump, you want to explode upward, jumping as high as you can focusing on keeping the first initial contact with the ground as short as possible. You want to find a box height that allows you to jump the highest which takes some playing around to find, but it will allow your muscles to be worked optimally.
Key things to note
The reason why I got the most out of the exercises was because of 2 factors that separated me from all the others who were frustrated with their results. The first was because I trained consistently. I had a strict schedule that I stuck with religiously. The second was because I trained correctly. Although the exercises are great, I used these alongside other important ones. I had a specific training program that told me exactly what to do, how much to do, and when to do. If I was going to be putting all this work in, I was sure that I was going to be doing it correctly.
