In this article I am going to explain how you can develop your muscular power to increase your vertical.
How can muscular power help to increase my vertical?
Muscular power is the force your muscles generate in a short burst of time. It can be looked at as the muscles explosive ability. Sprinters use their muscular power when their legs make quick bursts each time they push off the ground. Boxers use their power when they deliver quick yet forceful punches at their opponent. And of course basketball players use their muscular power when they explode off the ground to dunk a basketball. Power can be looked at as the relationship between your natural strength and speed. Therefore you should look to use exercises that develop both your strength and speed in conjunction.
What are exercises to develop muscular power?
Squat jumps is a great exercise that trains both your strength and speed. Stand with you feet shoulder width apart, arms in a 90 degree angle, and back straight. Lower your body so that your thighs are parallel with the ground and then explode upwards having your arms drive you up. At your highest point, your body should be straight with your arms reaching to the sky and legs extended. You should land in your original position and repeat immediately. Try to minimize the time in between jumps. Shoot for about 10 reps per set.
Important points to note:
Although squat jumps work great to develop your muscular power to increase your vertical, it is just one of many exercises that you should utilize. When I trained, I found success by training with many different exercises that trained my weaker muscles for power. I learned what my specific weaknesses were and worked on them – through that, I saw huge results. The most important aspect of a vertical jump program is that it utilizes many exercises that suit to your particular body type. Everyone has a different body composition so a program that suits one person, may not show the same results to another. It is vital that you understand the type of body that you have and train with exercises that tailor to that.
What is your body type and what kind of exercises will you benefit the most from? Many vertical jump programs out today have tests to determine your body type and will tailor a program to that. There are two important things in basketball, one is your shot and the other is your vertical jump. You have probably seen many players on the shorter side with incredible hops that you couldn’t believe and thought were God given talent. Well, they might be, but many high school and college players are taking their average vertical jumps and transforming them into amazing hops thanks to vertical jump training.
The proof begins with players who as short as 5′7″ have increased their vertical and can actually dunk a basketball! By using the right training program, players have transformed average verticals to unbelievable verticals. There are plenty NBA players with verticals that are significantly less than what players achieve when they use vertical jump programs. In fact, the average prospect for the NBA has a one-step vertical of 28-30 inches. It’s possible to achieve a vertical closer to 42 inches with the right program.
Transform your average vertical it into an amazing vertical with a few easy steps. High school players can enhance their talent and skills and increase their odds of being chosen for a college team. The same goes for college players looking to stand out on the court. An amazing vertical will certainly do that and could be the path to the NBA. Above all, men and women basketball players can simply play better ball by improving their hops.
What’s a Vertical Plan about? High school and college basketball players have a lot of competition and must practice long and hard to stand out. However, they must know how to practice and train in the best way for their bodies. For example, the average linebacker has a vertical of 36 inches although he weighs significantly more than most basketball players. This is shocking at first, but it proves the basis of vertical jump training, which is there are core muscle groups that must be trained to develop an explosive vertical jump. Power and strength are what are most important for the highest vertical jump possible.
The basis of the plan is to determine the athlete’s force, speed, bodyweight and body fat percentage. All of these numbers are used to create a specially designed program for each individual athlete. The most important aspect of an amazing vertical is strength and knowing how the individual athlete should train to build that strength.

So how can you jump higher to dunk a basketball like Nate Robinson, Kobe or any of your other favorite players? The good news is that there are many vertical leap programs out there…
The bad news is that the vast majority of them are complete duds. Then there are the programs that only work for some people and not for others.
Why are so many programs inconsistent?
They are incomplete because they only workout a small number of the muscles responsible for leaping. If you happen to be weaker in those muscles than you will improve your athleticism…but if you aren’t than you won’t gain a single inch.
#1) BAD training methods
Most programs train athletes too slow-pure and simple. This is now how to jump higher to dunk a basketball. Remember, the vertical leap is a quick and powerful motion…so it stands to reason that you need to train in a fast manner if you want to gain inches.
INTENSITY is the only way to gain inches
Most programs athletes are only giving 50% or even less. This will help you sustain a less than top effort for a long time but it won’t help you improve your short term explosiveness.
If you want to know how to dunk like Vince Carter, Michael Jordan or Lebron James you need to keep your workouts brief but very vigorous.
#2) HORRIBLE nutrition advice
Eating lots of meat and drinking lots of milk are NOT NECESSARY to get the protein and calcium your body needs…despite what most programs claim. Meat and dairy do more harm than good, and consuming them will actually hurt your athleticism.
Vegan is the way to go
I wouldn’t recommend trying to eliminate all meat and dairy at once…this will just lead to frustration. Instead eliminate them gradually.
To sum up…
Short and vigorous workouts are the only way to improve your vertical…but you will never achieve your max vertical without sound nutrition. This is how to jump higher to dunk a basketball.

Watching someone dunk a basketball is usually considered one of the highlight moments of a basketball game. In fact in the middle of a highly contested game a dunk at the right time can be a momentum changer. It’s no fluke that the NBA dunk contest has always brought out the NBA players who wanted to make a name for themselves by performing the most acrobatic and daring dunks. This article will focus on how to jump higher to dunk a basketball.
Jump School Basics
Before we get started with this you should set the appropriate level of expectation. Improving your jumping ability is not going to occur overnight and along the way a fair amount of discipline will be required of you. Having said that to dunk better you are going to have to improve your leg muscle strength. Some of the information presented here is simple but also tedious. I will state the top two exercises for improving your vertical leap.
Exercise #1 – Jumping
One of the best ways to improve your jumping ability is to do just that. What you are looking to do here is to find a stationary structure where you can easily gauge your jump attempts against it. To get started take 5 jumps from a standing position and mark off your highest jump and your lowest jump. Now you are going to perform this exercise at least 3-4 times every week performing 3 sets of 10 repetitions. A repetition will not be counted if it falls below the lowest mark you recorded initially. In 4 to 6 weeks time you should be marking measurable increases in your highest jump.
Exercise #2 – Leg Exercises
Of course you have to strengthen your leg muscles in order to be able to jump higher and dunk a basketball better. I will present some leg exercises that you do that do not even require you to have a gym membership. The three exercises are as follow:
1) Jump Rope. Spend anywhere from 10-30 minutes a few times a week exercising with a jump rope. This will improve your jumping ability and dexterity.
2) Jogging. Spend at least 20-30 minutes a few times a week jogging. Even better if you are able to do this in the sand. This will improve your cardiovascular and jumping ability.
3) Toe Raises. You want to do 3 sets of 10 repetitions a few times a week. If you are not familiar with this exercise is works by standing firmly on the ground. Then raise up on your toes and then come back down. That would be considered one repetition. This will improve your QUICK jumping ability as well as ankle strength and lower leg strength.
Overall, jumping higher to dunk a basketball depends on your mood during the play. Open up your mind, be happy and relaxed while playing the game.

There are various kinds of exercises for learning how to dunk a basketball and jumping higher. There are also various kinds of equipment you can use in order to train your muscles. However, I have found that what works best is sticking to the basics. When I say basics I mean sticking to your workout and exercise schedule and doing the right kind of exercises when required.
Also as many of you know dunking a basketball is also very mental in nature. It is not always all physical. In this article I am going to explain how to jump higher and slam dunk. Do you want to score more points, have more playing time, or just experience the feeling of soaring up to dunk a basketball? It’s actually pretty simple what it’s going to take for you to increase your vertical jump: train consistently and train correctly. All you have to do is make sure that your doing those two things and you’ll jump higher. This may sound oversimplified but I’ll tell you what my basketball coach told me when I was in high school: KISS (keep it simple stupid)!
Train Consistently:
The reason that most people don’t reach their vertical jump potential is they don’t train consistently. Self-discipline is really what is going to separate you from the rim. KISS – the more you train, the higher you will jump – it’s that’s simple. The people that have a hard time increasing their vertical jump are those that will go hard for a few weeks, then take a few weeks off, then go on for a week or two, then relax for a month, and then they get frustrated with their lack of results and just give up. Work consistently and you will see results – track your results frequently. These are going to be your mini accomplishments that will help you to keep going – if you have seen that you’ve gained ?” on your vertical in the last few weeks that will be all the encouragement you’ll need to want to gain another ?”. Take it one step and a time and congratulate yourself on every step, every gain, and every improvement along the way.
Train Correctly:
Training consistently won’t do you any good if you aren’t training correctly. Along with working hard, working smart is paramount in your vertical development success. Every athlete is different – our muscles and body composition are all unique and with that, we need to train our unique bodies with a unique plan to suit us. Did you know that there are two different types of leapers, different kinds of jumping styles, different types of fast twitch, slow twitch muscle fibers in everybody, which makes us all different? One vertical development program that has developed the person to jump higher and slam dunk, may not do the same for you. You must train the parts of your body that need the most work, and that is different for everyone.
You have to find yourself a vertical jump program that tailors itself to your body type. What is your body type and jumping style? Well many vertical jump programs out there will make you a custom program for you to train correctly.
Which vertical jump program is the best? There are a lot of great programs out there and a lot of crap ones that you need to stay away from. Visit The Jump Manual site for more detail.
